Mutually Assured Destruction: Patent Armageddon

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Latest news from CNN Money:

Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith and licensing chief Horacio Gutierrez sat down with Fortune recently to map out their strategy for getting FOSS users to pay royalties. Revealing the precise figure for the first time, they state that FOSS infringes on no fewer than 235 Microsoft patents.

The report covers the threat from Microsoft to sue the end users of certain Open Source programs which Microsoft themselves feel that are infringing on their patents.

The Open Source Community are unfazed by the threat as reported with their grounds on the fact the software algorithms are nothing but a sequence of mathematics equation and hence cannot be patented. True enough, we have seen the outcome of the gif format lawsuit and many Open Source project had since not undertake the gif format in their features. But of course there is PNG who comes in and fill the gap left by gif.

My opinion is that the threat by Microsoft is one to retart the market share lost it is experiencing in their flagship product of MS office. OpenOffice offers a strong alternative to MS Office and it is literally free. Likewise Apache host most of the internet websites as compared to MS Server.

Giving such threat may slow down the take up rate of Open Source programs by some entities but if it comes up blank, MS will need to have some really huge PR campaign to make up for even more lost ground.

My take on this: If MS wins, users who cannot afford MS office goes to Google Apps. If MS list, users who are afraid of potential similar lawsuit, will move to Google Apps.

Now now, MS is playing catching up on the Search Engine front, while waging a war that can potentially drives more users to Google Apps. Hmmm… Hope MS’s legal eagles are doing the right thing.

Google wins.

And Open Source to come back stronger, even with their own patent. Not to mention that some big companies behind the Open Source Movement may throw their muscles behind Linux and co. programs to ensure a mutually assured destruction via Patent Armageddon.

Keyword Forecast at AdLab Microsoft

Monday, May 7th, 2007

A interesting feature that AdLab at Microsoft provide is a keyword forecast system. It seems that it does capture previous search of the entered terms and it trys to forecast, by 3 months the trend of the search queries.

It makes for interesting read and discussion. I am not too sure if the results can be trusted but it sure gives me some grounds for base marketing research on for my boss. And of course, numbers and forecast always appeal to the inner geek in me.

Some screen shots for the search query “hedir”:

Hedir on Keyword Forcase
Click for Bigger Image (link to image)

At the same time, it covers some stats on the gender and age grouping of the (potential) visitors. Seems to me that Hedir are most frequented by the young adults and are equally split at 50/50 for males and females.

This feature is not a office feature of Microsoft as yet but is avaliable at Microsoft AdLabs.

Till then for more useful sites and features. This is redhex signing off.

Wikia search project

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

A news highlight which I find to be really interesting and could have impact on the way search is done:

The Wikia project aims to develop a search engine, crawlers and other indexing tools through a collaborative, open-source process.

We are looking at a series of tools that helps to create a collaborative and open-source style of search for all.

The ultimate goal of the project is to bring “absolute transparency, collaboration and human intelligence to complement search algorithms.”

Not mentioned in the press release is the fact that Wikia is a for-profit venture. The complete business plan has yet to be worked out, but profits and revenue may be derived from advertising or services, Penchina said. The intellectual property behind Wikia, however, will be freely licensed under standard open-source mechanisms.

So there is no business plans as yet, just a hugh concept. But is will be really interesting. What I do like are the tools. It should level the playing field for smaller players (smaller search engine wannabe) to cater for niche markets.

One word, it should helps us all!

everyone loves ella

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Who is ella you might ask?

Ella is the name for Wordpress 2.1. The feature set look really cool and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. to list some of the features:

  • Autosave makes sure you never lose a post again.
  • Our new tabbed editor allows you to switch between WYSIWYG and code editing instantly while writing a post.
  • Our completely redone visual editor also now includes spell checking.
  • New search engine privacy option allows you take you to indicate your blog shouldn’t ping or be indexed by search engines like Google.
  • You can set any “page” to be the front page of your site, and put the latest posts somewhere else, making it much easier to use WordPress as a content management system.
  • Links in your blogroll now support sub-categories and you can add categories on the fly.
  • More AJAX to make custom fields, moderation, deletions, and more all faster. My favorite is the comments page, which new lets you approve or unapprove things instantly.
  • Pages can now be drafts, or private.
  • Our admin has been refreshed to load faster and be more visually consistent.
  • A new version of the Akismet plugin is bundled.

The only issue I have with Wordpress so far is the speed. In terms of saving and publishing. Imagine having a intensive post, like this, you might want to save the post half way thru, only to have you train of thoughts interrupt by a slow saving process. Hence faster saving is good with faster MSql queries. Autosave is nice too. I do need to see that to comment more.

AJAX. I starting to like Ajax. Simple cos I am working on the Ajax portion of a particular web project at the time being. Ajax is really useful for mutiple operations on a particular form. Especially in comment moderation. So do hope over and get Wordpress 2.1 now.

Everyone loves Ella.

die spammers die!

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Pardon the over dramatic headline.

Anyway this post marks a milestone. redhex managed to overcome procastination and activiated the askimet plugin with activiation key to stop the spam that redhex.hedir.com had been getting. Easily one a normal day, this blog will be hit by 20+ spam posts.

Hence it had been getting more painful to moderate comments and such. With the plugin, redhex.hedir believe that instant comment can be allowed and readers of the blog can have their comments instantly shown and posted. Sweet heh?

At the same time, redhex.hedir.com will expose the people behind the spams. Presenting the top ten spammers (as of this post date)

  1. Alex Blood (aka Alexander Mosh, AlekseyB, Alex Polyakov)
  2. Leo Kuvayev (aka BadCow)
  3. Michael Lindsay (iMedia Networks)
  4. Ruslan Ibragimov (send-safe.com)
  5. Amichai Inbar
  6. Pavka (aka Artofit)
  7. Vincent Chan
  8. Alexey Panov
  9. Jeffrey Peters (JTel / CPU Solutions)
  10. Tim Goyetche

Not that they are good friends of mine. The information are from good-doing wonderful people at Spamhaus.org.

Cheers for No Spam Blogging! NSB!

blog or forum?

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

To the community,

redhex.hedir is considering moving the hedir games series to the forum, given the response on the blog.
Posting it on the blog has several disadvantages, of which primarily is visibility. The post may appear on the blogs links for a few days before other newer (newer does not mean more quality) posts from other hedir post pushes the logo game post out of the top blog links. Placing the post link on my signature does not give a lot of mileage as I had given that a shot.

Secondly is the amount of spam comments the posts are getting. I could end up spending more time clear spam than to response to games comments. And since the forum had removed guest posting, I feel it will do some good for everyone to move it to the forum.

Thirdly, in the forums, reply by the community will be much smoother without having to enter the email/url/name as one would in the blogs comments. It also prevent identity issue should someone fake someone else.

Given these consideration, I feel it will be good to shift the games to the forums and still post the games here in redhex.hedir for continuity sake. I need some feedback to see if this is a viable/workable idea. Everyone please.

slight bug in hedir blogs

Saturday, July 8th, 2006

It just come to my attention that there is a linking error from hedir main pages to redhex.hedir

The post concern is my third post on quotes: given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow

It seems that the link on the main pages of hedir links to:

http://redhex.hedir.com/2006/07/05/given-enough-eyeballs-all-bugs-are-shallow/

while the actual link to the post is at:

http://redhex.hedir.com/2006/07/06/given-enough-eyeballs-all-bugs-are-shallow/

All I can say that I am at fault for being trigger happy. I clicked “publish” instead of “save as” and then proceed to change the date for the post to go “live”. Apologise for that error on my part. It seems that the integration script between the main pages and the blogs is not real time. Heck, it does not happen everyday.

Anyway, enough of these technical and buggy talk. To check out what you are missing, you can either try hedir game version 02 or read about the quotes that you had been missing. (Mouse over the links to read the quote!)
