hedir and creative commons

Before the fun begin at redhex.hedir, I have to put my fingers down on some serious stuff on hedir first. Hence the new catergory Seriously Hedir.

Hedir content is licensed under creative commons 2.0. And more information can be found at this link:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/

For the ease of understanding, I had included the content from that page in the following:

You are free:

  • to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work
  • to make derivative works
  • to make commercial use of the work

Under the following conditions:

by
Attribution. You must give the original author credit.
  • For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the licence terms of this work.
  • Any of these conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder.

Your fair use and other rights are in no way affected by the above.

That is the summarised version from:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/legalcode

which is the real mumbo jumbo of legal terms and English.

And so what does this got to do with hedir? There is quite a bit to do with hedir. That if you dig more and you may find something on the hedir’s term of use page.

To quote the content from that page:

Under the copyright part. It states that

  • Hedir content is not meant for commercial use without prior permission from us.

I believe that with cc 2.0, as long as the source (that is hedir.com) is cited, content can be duplicated.

  • You should not copy the display pages or the designs of hedir.com anywhere. Doing so will be considered a copyright violation.

For this I agree and there is some kind of grey area here. Content should refer to the worded and readable portion of hedir. The color theme and logo (those artistic components) should not be freely copied unless citied with permission. The branding of hedir should be considered and protected.

  • Please remember that you are not getting any license or other rights from us including intellectual property or other proprietary rights of hedir.com or other companies with which we are associated.

Here again, is pretty pointless given that cc 2.0 assigns some rights to the user. Or whoever is copying the content.

How this this affect us?

Currently I am not too sure how it affects us. For sure it will serve the community well if there is clarification on this issue. All post under hedir.com will be protected under cc 2.0 and hence gives credit to whoever post it. The reviews are effort from our reviewers and we do have a lot of intelligent people active here.

I agree with you, redhex. These are serious issues indeed. We need to set well defined guidelines when it comes to copyright policies. I am sending a PM to Lakhya to discuss the issues with us and set things right.
